Male Haflinger Horse Skull

Published:

Description

Species: Equus ferus caballus
Length: 62cm
Width: 25cm
Origin: Germany

Info: This is the skull of a fullgrown haflinger stallion/gelding (we don't know which of those, but for sure male). It was killed with a shot (most likely with a gib) in the head. The teeth are pretty worn therefore we suggest it was not a young horse. Those 'fangs' are usually removed when they are younger - however, this specimen still has them. In nature they are used for territorial fights. Another 'special' fact: This skull has its nasal bones, which is extremely rare for horse skulls and many other big skulls. Beside that those bones are the reason the skull has a little smell since there is still a lot of tissue there.

Fun Facts:

1. There are only seven species of Equus.
2. Horses can't vomit.

hi,

stallion, geldings are (mostly) castrated when 1-2 years age. the 'fangs' are a testosteron influenced thing that they grow big when the horse is reproductive (3-4) years.

so in geldings castrated young they are small, stallions castrated on later age (breeding horses) have normal ones.

1 mare thougth on 150 has small fangs in the upper jaw

as so far the theoretical basis, i just write what's in my notes about it...

i will ad some pics of my horses, they are actually all male...
